In fact, she'd ignored all his questions since they'd left her apartment over four hours before. Just outside of town she'd stopped and rented a Ford Explorer, leaving her pickup in the parking lot of the rental place. Chris had made no comment, just hauled their stuff from one car to the other and climbed into the passenger seat once more.
Chris slanted a glance toward the driver. She drove with determination, her jaw set as she watched both the road and her rear-view mirror with equal interest. She would protect himbut at what cost to herself?
Having his life threatened wasn't a new situation to Chris. But since the last time he'd made sure he would be prepared should the situation ever arise again. Though he might not look the part, Christian McCall had trained himself for every eventuality. The problem was, whatever he had done or seen that had caused his life to be targeted for extinction could just as easily be something D.J. knew, as well. D.J. was tough and could probably take care of herself without his help, but he had no guarantees she would be safe if he left her alone.
D.J. flicked on her directional signal and left the interstate. She pulled into a hotel amid a plethora of other hotels and restaurants lining a service drive next to the freeway.
